On 25 to 27 October 2007, COPENMIND sponsored and participated the EUA* (European University Association) autumn convention in Wroclaw, Poland, where university representatives from all over Europe participated in discussing the future governance of European universities. For three days, COPENMIND had the possibility to interact with approximately 300 university representatives and to market the COPENMIND concept to them.
Dealing with core issues in relation to university governance under the headline of “The Governance of European Universities post 2010: Mission Diversity, Autonomy and Accountability”, the EUA convention took an important step towards the fulfilment of the Lisbon declaration stating that:
“For universities, the adaptability and flexibility required to respond to a changing society and to changing demands relies above all on increased autonomy and adequate funding, giving them the space in which to find their place… Autonomy implies control of major assets such as estates, and of staff; it also implies a readiness to be accountable both to the internal university community – both staff and students – and to society as a whole.”
Its sponsorship of the EUA convention reflects that COPENMIND strongly believes that in order to foster the various elements of university autonomy and accountability introduced in the Lisbon declaration, dialogue between universities and the industry is necessary. This is reflected in the COPENMIND concept in which the creation of a platform for university/industry cooperation is critical. COPENMIND introduces itself as a facilitator for this valuable cooperation at a global level ensuring that the wealth creation hereof is to the benefit of the global society.
*The European University Association (EUA) represents and supports higher educational institutions in 46 countries. EUA is the result of a merger between the Association of European Universities (CRE) and the Confederation of European Union Rectors’ Conferences in March 2001.
